I have read the book “Hearts of Courage” by John M. Tippets and would like to post the following review.

I first met Joseph Tippets while I was attending UCLA and the Tippets family moved into my neighborhood and began attending the Inglewood California Ward. Brother Tippets was a very warm, outgoing man and had an engaging personality. The story went around that he had survived (i.e. “walked away from”) four different airplane crashes, which made him somewhat of a hero with the ward members, especially the younger ones. Being above all a practical person, I vowed that if I was ever seated on an airplane and saw Brother Tippets getting on board, that I would immediately get off the plane in spite of my admiration and respect for him! I was especially interested in the story of his 30-day survival in an Alaskan crash, but I was never able to get enough details to fully satisfy my curiosity about the event.

Therefore, I was thrilled to discover recently that John M. Tippets, the son of Joseph, had written the book “Hearts of Courage” and I immediately obtained a copy. The book is a veritable masterpiece and contains many photos, maps and copies of newspaper articles which fully establish the context of the remarkable story of survival contained in the book. Once begun, it is difficult to put the book down because of the gripping nature of the story of faith, endurance and courage of the survivors. After reading the book, all of my questions about the event have finally been answered and my faith in the strength of the human spirit has been greatly strengthened. It is truly an inspiring story of courage and survival as well as a wonderful tribute by a son to his parents.
